Scientific Name: Artemisia vulgaris Compositae AKA: Mugwort Parts Used: Root, leaves Active Compounds:coumarin, triterpenes, sesquiterpene lactone, volatile oil Background: In ancient Rome, mugwort was used to keep the feet smooth and supple while wearing sandals. Mugwort has also been used to provide comfort for women during the delivery of babies. It has been thought to start labor and aid in contractions. Mugwort is also used in China as a constituent of acupuncture treatment. There is some question as to what it really does for women's bodies. Some have used it to cause uterine contractions while others claim that it actually stops them. Applications: Tonic/Digestive/Women's health. Also used when making dream pillows, to help with sleep and having good dreams. Mugwort is primarily used in Chinese herbal medicine to prevent miscarriage and reduce menstrual bleeding. Tonic: Mugwort has been used as a tonic herb. Digestive: Mugwort has been used to aid in digestion and improve appetitie. It also helps to rid the body of intestinal worms. Women's health: Mugwort is used for childbirth and menstruation, though it's not clear what effect it has on the uterus. Description: Mugwort is a perennial that grows three feet high. It has red and yellow flowers and grows natively in the northern part of the world. The leaves and root are harvested in the summer before the plant flowers. Dosage: As a tincture, take 1-4 ml daily. As an infusion, add 1-2 tsp herb to 1 cup boiling water and infuse for 10-15 minutes. Drink 3 times daily. Safety: Mugwort should not be used during pregnancy.
